Microsoft has created a chatbot called Microsoft Copilot. It was introduced as Bing Chat on February 7, 2023, as a built-in feature for Microsoft Bing and Microsoft Edge. It is Microsoft’s main substitute for the discontinued Cortana. It is based on a large language model.

With Copilot, your daily AI companion, at the centre, we have been at the forefront of this change for the past year, innovating and enhancing our product experiences. We’ve listened to feedback and doubled down to create an experience that helps people every day, from reimagining how people get things done on the PC with Copilot in Windows to reinventing how people search with Copilot in Bing and unlocking productivity with Copilot for Microsoft 365. Our silicon partners AMD, Intel, and Qualcomm are also gaining tremendous traction. These companies have all unveiled their most recent innovations in silicon, which open up new AI experiences for Windows PCs.

Microsoft uses a freemium business model to run the service. While paid subscribers under the brand name “Microsoft Copilot Pro” have priority access to newer features, including the ability to create custom chatbots, the majority of its features are accessible to users on its free tier. The free version of Microsoft Copilot comes with a number of default chatbots, such as the standard Copilot chatbot and Microsoft Designer, which is focused on using its Image Creator to create images in response to text commands.

Microsoft started to standardise the Copilot branding across all of its chatbot products in 2023. Microsoft revealed plans to integrate Copilot into Windows 11 at its Build 2023 conference, enabling users to access it directly through the taskbar. An official Copilot key for Windows keyboards was announced in January 2024.
