Tackling deepfakes: MCA and Meta collaborate to stop AI-generated false information using a WhatsApp hotline

A Deepfakes Analysis Unit will be established by the Misinformation Combat Alliance to detect and stop the spread of misinformation facilitated by artificial intelligence among Indian internet users.In an effort to battle deepfakes and misleading AI-generated content, the Misinformation battle Alliance (MCA) and Meta have announced that the public will have access to a dedicated fact-checking helpline on WhatsApp starting in March 2024.

This year’s Lok Sabha elections are scheduled for April or May.”The Misinformation Combat Alliance (MCA) and Meta are working on launching a dedicated fact-checking helpline on WhatsApp in an effort to combat media generated using artificial intelligence (AI) which may deceive people on matters of public importance, commonly known as deepfakes, and help people connect with verified and credible information,” according to a press release. It also stated that the public will be able to access the helpline starting in March 2024.

MCA is a cross-sector partnership that unites businesses, organisations, institutions, trade groups, and other entities in the battle against misinformation and its effects. At the moment, it has 16 members, including media sites, civic tech, and fact-checking organisations.The MCA-Meta partnership will enable MCA to combat viral misinformation, especially deepfakes, along with its affiliated network of impartial fact-checkers and research institutions.

The WhatsApp chatbot, which will provide multilingual support in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu, will allow users to report deepfakes.A central Deepfake Analysis Unit (DAU) would be established by the MCA to oversee all incoming messages received through the WhatsApp helpline. They will collaborate closely with industry partners, digital laboratories, and member fact-checking groups to evaluate and validate the content and address the messages appropriately, dispelling misleading information and fabrications.

The programme, according to the release, is built around a four-pillar approach that includes detection, prevention, reporting, and raising public awareness of the growing problem of deepfakes. It also aims to create a vital tool that will give citizens access to trustworthy information in order to counteract the spread of false information.

Shivnath Thukral, Director, Public Policy India, Meta, commented on the collaboration, saying, “We acknowledge the apprehensions regarding AI-generated disinformation and think that countering this calls for tangible and collaborative actions across the industry.”The partnership with MCA to introduce a WhatsApp hotline aimed at dispelling deepfakes that have the potential to seriously mislead people is in keeping with Meta’s commitment made in the Tech Accord to Combat Deceptive Use of AI in 2024 Elections.

Misinformation Combat Alliance and Meta join hands to launch a dedicated fact-checking WhatsApp helpline

Meta’s partnerships with fact-checking organisations
